Pre-Purchase Survey
Highly recommended when purchasing a new or used vessel, a purchase survey entails the most comprehensive examination of the vessel. Non-invasive techniques are used to determine:
The structural integrity and condition of the hull, decks, cabin structures and rigging.- The vessels auxiliary systems including electrical, auxiliary power, fuel, fresh water, holding tank systems, steering, sails and rigging.
- An inventory of any structural problems or defects, determination of their seriousness and recommendations for repairs.
- An inventory of the vessel’s systems and equipment.
- Engines are assessed externally with regard to visible features such as mounts, alignment, plumbing and wiring. Specialized engine surveyors are recommended when necessary.
- Standing rigging is visually assessed from deck level and rigging specialists recommended as necessary.
- In depth appraisals of sails is the province of sail makers; however, the surveyor will hoist and inspect sails if requested.
- Surveyors will attend sea trials if requested.
Written reports provide:
- A complete legal description of the vessel.
- An inventory of the vessel’s equipment.
- A discussion of the vessel’s condition including defects found.
- An appraisal of the vessel’s suitability for its intended use and cruising waters.
- A report of recommendations for upgrading or renewal required in order that the vessel be compliant for insurance purposes with various codes including those of the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), Canadian and US Coast Guards and the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA).
Pre-purchase and purchase surveys are accepted for financing or insurance purposes. |
